Desulphurisation additive
Page last modified
May 5 2023
Iron additives come in powder form, consist of a basis of iron(hydr)oxide, such as FeO (Wüstite), Fe2O3 (Hematite), FeOOH (Goethite). The iron additive reacts with hydrogen sulphide (H2S) in the digester during the process of anaerobic digestion.
FeSfix : iron oxide based on one third FeO and two thirds Fe2O3 with 50% iron (Fe) and natural trace elements.
FeSfix-Red : iron hydroxide based on two thirds FeOOH and a significant amount of Fe2O3 with 50% iron (Fe).
FeSfix-Red Plus : iron oxide based on >80% Fe2O3 with >55% iron (Fe) and an average particle size of 1µm, 25µm or 50µm.
Pro/con
The actual sulphur remains in the digestate and is then applied to the soil as a valuable sulphur fertiliser
Formation of sulphides in ferments reduces H2S in the gas phase and improves the process of methanogenesis since this process is no longer hindered by a high concentration of H2S.
Corrosive effects on concrete and metal parts of equipment are limited. Improved availability of trace elements to bacteria and as a consequence obtention of a higher biogas yield.
There is no ferment salinity as in the case of other chlorides containing iron compounds.
Powder form that needs to be added with the raw material, cannot be pumped.

Optimisation
Longer lifetime of oil in the co-generator and a reduction in dosing of trace elements lead to significant financial savings.
Packaging
FeSfix comes in big bags of 1,000 kg or biodegradable paper bags of 20 or 25 kg.
