For sand/solids and liquids in process vessels

Page last modified
August 11 2023

Nicoustic has developed accurate non-intrusive technology for vessel level monitoring based on Guided Ultrasonic Waves. Our sensors are placed on the outside of a vessel and detect liquids and solids levels. Measurement of emulsion and foam interface layers is under development. We are also developing non-intrusive online vessel integrity monitoring using the same hardware.

Our technology is based on 20 years of Research at Fraunhofer IKTS and a partnership with Equinor. The first prototype has undergone extensive lab/pilot testing and is currently being prepared for field testing on a first stage separator offshore in Norway (to commence in Q4 2023). A JIP to further develop the system is being launched with start in Q1 2024.

We are interested in getting in touch with operators who would like to pilot our technology on their installations as well as to join the final R&D effort before the launch of the commercial system.

Pro/con

Non-intrusive (sensors are mounted on the outside of the vessel)
No radioactive source (Guided Ultrasonic Waves are utilized)
No vessel downtime during installation and maintenance
Horizontal or vertical vessel geometries
Can detect levels of solids and liquids
Potential for vessel integrity monitoring using the same hardware
Emulsion and foam level detection is not yet developed (R&D ongoing)

Specification

Areas of application Separators, sand management systems, MEG storage and regeneration, desalters, decanters
ATEX Certified Zone 1 Ex-certified
Installation and maintenance cost Low total cost due to uninterrupted production during installation and maintenance

Nicoustic is a spin-off from Fraunhofer IKTS based on more than 20 years of Guided Ultrasonic Waves research and an innovation challenge by Equinor. The company has its offices in Trondheim, Norway.

Our product is a non-intrusive vessel level monitoring system with sensors mounted on the outside of a vessel. The first prototype is now being prepared for deployment on an Equinor offshore platform in Norway.

Our goal is to offer accurate and fast level measurement that is easy to install and maintain.
