Next-generation electro-hydraulic control system delivers fast, precise, bidirectional control

Page last modified
December 5 2025

The Turing electro-hydraulic control system is a next-generation intelligent completion technology developed by Halliburton that provides fast, precise, bidirectional control of downhole interval control valves (ICVs). This advanced system can manage up to 12 zones using only three control lines - two hydraulic lines and one single-wire tubing encapsulated conductor (TEC).

The system enables operators to remotely and selectively adjust zonal ICV positioning in seconds, offering significant operational flexibility. Built-in high-resolution sensors increase fidelity and provide multiple choke positions, while the bidirectional control capability allows flow management from each zone without completely closing the ICVs. This supports both routine well optimization and fully automated, data-driven optimization technologies.

Key technical specifications include a maximum temperature rating of 135°C, maximum working pressure of 15,000 psi, and compatibility with both oil-based and water-based fluids. The system is available in multiple sizes ranging from 2 7/8 inches to 5 1/2 inches and features API 19E qualified electronics.

The Turing system is notable as the first electro-hydraulic control system capable of subsea applications and 12-zone completions using only three control lines. It includes built-in health diagnostics for proactive maintenance and uses an active electrical-switch design where each valve pairs with an actuator module for selective remote control. This technology reduces installation complexity, rig time, and operational risks while improving overall completion reliability.
