Non-intrusive, wired ultrasonic corrosion/ erosion monitoring system

Page last modified
February 17 2025

matPIMS are non-intrusive corrosion/erosion area monitors designed to take ultrasonic thickness readings to be collected and analyzed over time. They consist of an array or matrix pattern of single-element ultrasonic sensors to provide consistent coverage of targeted or critical areas.

matPIMS are available in two variations - 3x5 matrix and 1x15 linear array. The 3x5 matrix covers an area of 2x1.25 inches (51x32mm), while the 1x15 linear array covers a line of 7 inches (178mm). These arrays take highly repeatable thickness readings with a resolution of 0.001 inches (0.025mm).

The data from matPIMS can be transmitted to a SCADA/DCS system via Modbus (RS-485) for frequent polling, or manually offloaded using a PC/laptop. The collected data can then be uploaded to webPIMS, a cloud or on-premise data management system, for recording, trending, and analysis.

The key advantages of matPIMS include convenient and consistent data collection from a safe access point, corrosion rate monitoring, monitoring of known critical areas and low spots, monitoring of buried pipes and slurry lines, and cost reduction by eliminating the need for frequent manual inspections in difficult-to-reach areas.

Pros & Limitations
1
Installation of matPIMS on buried pipelines allows for convenient data collection without the need for frequent expensive digs.
1
Once installed, thickness data can be taken and collected as frequently as required from a safe and convenient access point.
1
matPIMS area monitors cover a larger range at critical locations. 1x15 Linear = 7" (178mm)
3x5 Matrix = 2x1.25" (51x32mm)
