Real-time measurement of entrained air in hydraulic systems

Page last modified
August 25 2025

HYDRx® is a gas void fraction monitoring system developed by CorVera that uses their patented SONARsentry™ technology to provide real-time, in-situ measurement of entrained air in hydraulic systems. It addresses the challenge of entrained air, which can reduce efficiency, operability, and component life in hydraulic systems.

The system utilizes industry-standard pressure sensors installed on the fittings at either end of a hydraulic hose to measure the gas void fraction within the fluid. HYDRx® can be installed with minimal intrusion and does not affect the normal operation of the hydraulic system. It offers both ported sensors for hard piping and clamp-on sensors for flexible hoses.

Key features of HYDRx® include real-time measurement with 1-second updates, no need for calibration due to its first principles physics approach, and the ability to perform simultaneous multi-channel measurements. The system provides both analog and digital outputs and generates CSV data and diagnostic log files.

HYDRx® can be used in laboratory settings to quantify and validate entrained air design objectives, assess system and component performance, and identify and mitigate entrained air issues before product delivery. It is also suitable for field deployment, with ruggedized and hazardous area rated versions available.

This technology enables hydraulic system designers and operators to effectively manage entrained air, which can influence reservoir design, filter selection, hydraulic fluid chemistry, and overall system capabilities.
