FloCheck (Production)
High-rate check valve for multi-zone producers preventing crossflow
The FloCheck Production is a valve system designed for multi-zone oil and gas wells with different pressure levels. It functions as both a conventional Inflow Control Device (ICD) and a permanent check valve, making it particularly valuable for wells with varying depletion levels across different zones.
The device features a nozzle inlet and free-floating disc mechanism. During normal production flow, the disc moves away from the inlet, allowing fluids to pass through freely. However, when flow reverses direction, the disc automatically seals against the inlet, effectively preventing backflow from higher-pressure zones into lower-pressure zones. This autonomous operation helps maintain optimal production management without manual intervention.
The FloCheck Production remains closed as long as overbalance pressure exists. Once this pressure is removed through production or sufficient depletion of higher-pressure zones, the disc moves away from its seat, enabling flow from lower-pressure areas.
Originally developed for high-rate, multi-layer gas wells, the system is applicable to both carbonate and sandstone reservoirs and can be installed in new or existing wells. It mounts on a sub or within a sand screen and is compatible with gravel packing operations. The device is particularly beneficial for enabling complete well perforation and completion in a single operation, eliminating the need for re-entry and sequential perforation in multi-zone, multi-pressure wells. It withstands high flow rates and pressure drops while providing density-dependent functionality.
