Electromagnetic Pig Tracking & Locating
Knowledge-Driven Precision and Assurance
Page last modified

Electromagnetic (EM) pig tracking involves placing an EM Transmitter inside a pig. The transmitter emits a signal that can be detected externally using an EM Receiver. This enables precise locating of the pig within the pipeline. Specialised applications on handheld devices or laptops offer graphical signal representation and allow users to adjust transmitters and receiver parameters as needed.
Pros & Limitations
1
Constant signal strength - as battery life depletes, the transmitter's signal strength remains constant.
1
Precise detection - an inherent electromagnetic null spot is detectable using an electromagnetic antenna meaning the operator can confirm the transmitter's location within a few centimetres.
1
Receivers are designed for simple operation with one control carrying out all functions
1
Receivers are designed to track multiple frequencies
1
Dedicated Apps allow transmitter and receiver parameters to be easily adjusted and received signal to be viewed in graphical form
