Carbon capture technology for large-scale emissions reduction from industrial sources

Page last modified
August 28 2025

Econamine FG Plus is a proprietary carbon capture technology developed by Fluor with over 30 years of operational experience. It is designed to remove CO2 from large single-point emission sources, including gas turbine exhaust, coal/lignite flue gas, reformer flue gas, and fuel oil fired boiler flue gas.

The technology uses a concentrated solvent formulation that reduces heat requirements and circulation rates for post-combustion CO2 capture. Key features include absorber intercooling, a lean vapor compressor, and a solvent maintenance system. The process can handle flue gas with CO2 concentrations as low as 3 vol% and oxygen content up to 15 vol%.

The Econamine FG Plus unit typically consists of flue gas cooling/conditioning, CO2 absorption, stripping with energy recovery, and product compression. It can generate CO2 suitable for enhanced oil recovery, methanol and urea production, food and beverage applications, or underground sequestration.

Advantages of the technology include low solvent make-up costs, ultra-low absorber emissions, and heat recovery integration. It has been commercially proven on various flue gas sources and is being extended to cement and steel mill applications. Fluor offers both the technology license and EPC services, providing a single point of accountability for project execution.
