CUT CO2 system
Upcycles industrial CO2 emissions and byproducts into low-carbon cement materials
The CUT CO2 system by Carbon Upcycling is a modular, skid-mounted technology designed for decarbonizing hard-to-abate industries. It's a circular solution that upcycles industrial CO2 emissions and byproducts into low-carbon cement materials.
The system operates as a drop-in solution, requiring minimal site infrastructure and maintenance. It features an all-electric drivetrain, allowing for complete decoupling from fossil fuels and flexible operation to match energy demand fluctuations. The process is cost-competitive with current cement prices at commercial scale.
CUT CO2 captures CO2 directly from industrial emissions sources, even at concentrations as low as 4%. It then utilizes this CO2 to enhance solid waste byproducts or natural minerals into high-performance supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). The process occurs at ambient temperature and is near-dry, producing no wastewater.
The technology operates continuously to match the 24/7 nature of industrial facilities. It first prepares the feedstock material (industrial byproducts or natural minerals) by exfoliating it to capture CO2. The flue gas is then introduced "as is" into the system, where CO2 is selectively sequestered into the material. The result is a high-performance cementitious material that can replace carbon-intensive clinker in cement blends.
This process not only reduces CO2 emissions but also provides a solution for industrial solid waste, creating a circular economy in cement production. The company claims their technology can achieve up to 60% carbon reduction through capture and abatement in cement manufacturing.
