Wireless downhole pressure and temperature monitoring for wells

Page last modified
August 26 2025

The CaTS EMX wireless monitoring system is Expro's advanced downhole monitoring technology that provides real-time pressure and temperature data from suspended and abandoned wells. This battery-powered electromagnetic system transforms wells into valuable long-term monitoring assets that can operate for years after drilling operations are complete.

The system uses industry-leading quartz crystal sensors and electromagnetic technology to transmit high-resolution data through various barriers including cement and bridge plugs. It offers up to 45 times improvement in data volume and 4 times longer system life compared to previous generations. The technology operates without requiring tubing or completion strings in the well, making it ideal for abandoned or suspended wells.

Key applications include interference testing to understand reservoir characteristics and connected volumes, long-term pressure monitoring for reservoir evaluation, CO2 plume tracking for carbon storage projects, and well integrity monitoring for leak detection. The system enables operators to gather critical subsurface data that helps characterize reservoirs, validate models, and refine field development plans.

The CaTS EMX system features flexible data transmission rates controllable from surface, compatibility with third-party equipment, diagnostic functionality, and the ability to request historical data or on-demand readings. It supports through-seawater communications and can be integrated with other downhole devices. This technology is particularly valuable for carbon capture and storage projects, exploration campaigns, and production optimization, providing operators with essential data to make informed decisions about reservoir management and field development strategies.
