Description

We are experiencing Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD) product is becoming hazy in all Diesel Hydrotreater (DHT) units, especially when sample is taken during night and early morning. When a sample is taken at the unit it is bright & clear, however when it reaches to lab in due course, it is reported as hazy.

We understand that this phenomenon is because of sample cooling down due to weather conditions. As sample cools down, moisture comes out in suspension form (out of dissolved form) and causes the haziness even when it is lower than the required product specification. (Present ULSD moisture is in the range of 60-90 ppm against unit design 150 wt. ppm max).

We are seeking expert advice on how to best deal with the sample and would like to receive suggestions for the latest technology or method to insulate the sample of ULSD while transferring to the KIPIC lab.

We are seeking following outcomes from the study:

  1. Cause of Haziness to be confirmed if it is because of moisture or any other compound.
  2. If cause of haziness is moisture, level of moisture that causes haziness with respect to different temperature conditions.
  3. If cause of haziness is moisture, impact of Aromatics content of Product/Feed that can keep moisture in dissolved form.
  4. Appearance and Moisture content upon sample settling at different time frame.

Based on the cause of haziness, unit parameters can be adjusted to achieve the bright and clear specifications.
