The Energy industry has truly pushed the boundaries over time, and delivered projects that were considered unthinkable not too long ago. Technology has truly been an enabler. Yet, despite the undeniable role that technology has played, it is also clear that there is significant room to further accelerate the speed of technology deployment.

The good news is: technology deployment can be done… faster and with higher chances of success!

In order to support our customers with the technology deployment drive, we have designed a workshop Technology Deployment: How to get it done and maximise outcomes!  During the workshop, we share and discuss tools, processes and insights to position technologies for success and to successfully deliver the technology.

Since starting TechnologyCatalogue.com in March 2018, we have delivered this workshop to tens of customers, participated by over 500 people at different levels of their respective organisations. Participants themselves emphasised that the workshop resulted in:

  • Better understanding of how and why technology gets deployed, including the technical and business drivers that ensure success, and how to position technology accordingly;

  • Deeper knowledge of how to use the right tools and processes to effectively address business challenges with technology; and

  • Understanding of the critical success factors for making deployments happen and how to organise the technology delivery in line with these critical factors.

Typically, a workshop lasts 4 hours. While this is naturally not sufficient to go into detail, the workshop does help to give participants an understanding about technology deployment matters and to create the right mindset. If desired, we can deliver the workshop in a full day or two-day format, allowing a deep dive and providing adequate time to have multiple exercises.

The workshop has three main components.

How to select technologies

The first component focuses on how to select the right technologies for your business.  The number of technologies that are available on the market is overwhelming, and new ones become available every single day. Selecting the right technology for your business may seem like finding a needle in the haystack! However, there are ways to do this, no matter how large or small your company is. In this blog, we already shared a number of tips. And as part of the workshop, we share more practical strategies and techniques to guarantee that you  select the right technology.

Apply the Tech Positioning Programme

Once an initial selection of technologies is made, an important next step is to estimate the (perceived) Impact versus (perceived) Do-Ability of the technologies. We do this through our Tech Positioning Programme (earlier referred to as Technology Stress Test), where a technology is assessed against ~30 criteria grouped under 7 themes. By doing this programme, we provide you with key insights into the reasons why a technology is difficult or relatively easy to deploy. Furthemore, the outcome of the Tech Positioning Programme is also instrumental in defining specific actions to increase the chances of success. Our experience is that most challenges for getting technology deployed are non-technical, and the Tech Positioning Programme reflects that.

The Tech Positioning Programme is not a one-off activity. As new information becomes available, and changes happen in the business environment, the Impact versus Do-Ability for a customer needs to be reassessed so you can target the right customers at any moment in time.

Further information can be found in earlier blogs, such as: Tech Positioning: a Recurring Activity!

During the workshop, we give you an opportunity to practice the Tech Positioning Programme and apply it to a technology that you want to get going in your business. We provide you feedback based on our experience.

Critical success factors for technology deployment

Creating a solid portfolio of technologies is important, but that in itself is not sufficient. A lot more work is needed to make the business case, get the required support and sustainably embed the technology into the business, including all related change management aspects.

During the workshop, we give you practical insights and tools on how to handle this.

This experience is not only based on the years that the TechnologyCatalogue.com founders were leading technology deployment activities in Shell.  We also refer to our experiences with the numerous customers we supported since starting TechnologyCatalogue.com in March 2018 where we delivered significant value as a result!

Following the workshop, we can also support your company further, for example by supporting you with streamlining your technology deployment activities , including creating fit-for-purpose technology deployment processes for your company.

Conclusion

Technology deployment in the Energy industry is challenging, but it can be done. By applying the learnings of our technology deployment workshop, you will immediately be able to make a difference and improve business performance. We speak from experience when we say that particularly in the current challenging business environment, technology can make a difference!

About us

The founders of TechnologyCatalogue.com led technology deployment activities in support of assets across Shell. Over 600 deployments were successfully delivered, resulting in a very significant impact on safety, production and cost. We understand what it takes to get technology deployed, including all change management aspects related to it. Since starting TechnologyCatalogue.com in March 2018, we have supported multiple operators in Upstream and Downstream with technology deployment.

Our platform TechnologyCatalogue.com was developed based on the first-hand experience that it is often difficult for decision-makers to stay up to date on available technology-driven improvement opportunities for their business. It was launched in Q3 2018 and is steadily growing in terms of content & functionality. Since the launch, >40,000 unique users have accessed the platform. We’re also developing customized versions of the platform. For example, jointly with National Energy Resources Australia, we have delivered a customized version of the portal for Australia (Nera.TechnologyCatalogue.com)

In addition to TechnologyCatalogue.com, we also support suppliers and end-users with getting technology deployment done, through consultancy & workshops.

Technology solutions meet deployment expertise: How the Technology Catalogue will help deployment in the energy industry

TechnologyCatalogue.com was launched in Q3 2018 as a key tool to support the deployment of novel and proven technologies in the energy industry. It may be interpreted as a ‘Tripadvisor’ like web platform for technologies. However, there are also some key differences as deploying technology is unfortunately not as simple as booking a hotel or restaurant. Read this blog to find out how TechnologyCatalogue.com connects an overview of technologies for the energy industry from deployment expertise to maximise impact for suppliers, end-users and investors.

Is your technology portfolio robust in the current environment?

Although today’s business environment is clearly very challenging, there are still many opportunities to make a difference with technology. It is important though that your portfolio contains the right type of technologies; not only technologies that can make an impact in the medium- to longer-term, but also technologies that can make an impact right away.

In this blog, we will give you insights about the tools you can use to assess your current technology portfolio. Also, we’ll give insights where typically quick wins through technology deployment can be found. The insights are based on the work we have done in support of tens of operators in the past years.
